Here are four signs that it’s time for replacement windows.
Cold Air
Your windows are supposed to keep the cold air out. You’ll start to notice that even more now that the weather has started to cool down, especially at night. If you can feel cold air around the edges of your windows, that’s a sign that the seals have started to break down. If it gets bad enough, you will be able to see the seals falling apart or falling off the windows.
Condensation
Another indication that the seals are deteriorating is condensation on the inside of your windows. That means that too much air, either hot or cold, is getting through your windows and causing the moisture in the air to condense on the glass. Newer windows have foam spacers to help eliminate this problem.
Difficult to Open or Close
Your windows should be relatively easy to open and close. If your windows are made from a lighter material, you should be able to virtually throw them open with very little effort. Even heavier windows should slide smoothly along the track and be easy to lock and unlock. If they stick, they could be warped or otherwise damaged.
Cracked Frames or Panes
If a window pane is cracked, it’s only a matter of time before it breaks completely. If there is a crack in the window frame, it is also likely to spread or grow. You’ll want to get a replacement window as soon as possible before you have a broken window on your hands.
